Udyam (MSME) registration

Proof that you are a micro, small or medium enterprise. Banks and schemes ask for it.

Who needs it

  • Not compulsory, but most scheme and bank loans (MUDRA, CGTMSE, PMEGP) ask for it.
  • Worth doing on day one: it is free and takes minutes.

Cost: Free on the government portal. Sites that charge a fee are not the government.

Worth knowing

  • Investment and turnover figures are filled in from your PAN and GST records, so keep those consistent.
  • No PAN? Informal micro enterprises can register through the Udyam Assist Platform instead.

GST registration

Your GSTIN, which lets you charge GST, claim input tax credit and sell to other businesses.

Who needs it

  • Compulsory once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh a year for goods, or ₹20 lakh for services.
  • Lower in special category states: ₹20 lakh for goods and ₹10 lakh for services.
  • Compulsory from the first sale for supplying goods to another state, whatever the turnover.
  • Apply within 30 days of crossing the limit.

Cost: Free on the GST portal.

Worth knowing

  • Some states ask applicants to visit a GST Suvidha Kendra for biometric verification. The portal tells you if yours does.
  • The name and address must match exactly across PAN, the address proof and the bank proof. Mismatches are the commonest reason for a query.

Required for anyone who makes, sells, stores or serves food, including from home.

Who needs it

  • Registration: turnover up to ₹1.5 crore a year (raised from ₹12 lakh on 1 April 2026).
  • State licence: turnover from ₹1.5 crore to ₹50 crore.
  • Central licence: above ₹50 crore, and for importers, exporters and some other activities.
  • Registrations and licences issued from 1 April 2026 do not need renewing.

Cost: ₹100 government fee for registration. Licences cost more, depending on the category.
